TED TURNER A MAN WHOSE LEGACY COULD HAVE MILLENNIAL IMPACT?
Ted Turner has put huge amounts of his own money into forming UN Foundation - apparently a hi-level group planning action projects twice a year that could help make UN millennium goals more real for many people to network round - he also has committed a lot of cnn's own voice to transformational issues - see eg http://thecnnfreedomproject.blogs.cnn.com/

UNFoundation Board
The UN Foundation, a public charity, was created in 1998 with entrepreneur and philanthropist Ted Turner’s historic $1 billion gift to support UN causes and activities. The UN Foundation is an advocate for the UN and a platform for connecting people, ideas, and resources to help the United Nations solve global problems. We build partnerships, grow constituencies, mobilize resources and advocate policy changes to support the UN’s work for individual and global progress. The UN Foundation’s work - focused on select global problems - is decreasing child mortality, improving disaster relief, protecting diverse cultures and environments, creating a clean energy future, empowering women and girls, and improving U.S.-UN relations. For more information, visit www.unfoundation.org.
The UN Foundation meets semi-annually - most recently in Norway - extract from Yunus Cnetre Report:UN Foundation Board members joining Turner, Annan, Brundtland and Wirth in Norway are Her Majesty Queen Rania Al Abdullah (Jordan), Chairperson of the Queen Rania Foundation for Education and the Jordan River Foundation; Igor Ivanov (Russia), Former Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation; Hisashi Owada (Japan), President of the International Court of Justice; Emma Rothschild (U.K.), Jeremy and Jane Knowles Professor of History at Harvard University; Nafis Sadik (Pakistan), Special Advisor to the UN Secretary-General; Yuan Ming (China), Director, Institute of International Relations at Peking University; Andrew Young (U.S.A.), Chairman of Good Works International and former U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations; and Muhammad Yunus (Bangladesh), Founder of the Grameen Bank. The meetings are being hosted in Norway by Board member Gro Harlem Brundtland, Director-General Emeritus, World Health Organization and Former Prime Minister of Norway. While in Oslo, UN Foundation Board members will meet with HM King Harald V, HM Queen Sonja, HRH Crown Prince Haakon and HRH Crown Princess Mette-Marit. The Board's schedule includes a special session with Norway's Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg to map out ways to leverage Norway's ongoing support of UN causes and innovations that improve women's and children's health, including significant commitments to vaccinating children in developing countries. The Board will discuss UN Foundation and UN priorities and programs as part of meetings with Foreign Minister Jonas Gahr Støre and Erik Solheim, Minister for the Environment and International Development. The UN Foundation is participating in "New African Connections" - a high-level conference taking place in Oslo June 21-22 exploring creative solutions and partnerships in the areas of healthcare, finance and new technologies to advance development in Africa. Board members Kofi Annan, Gro Harlem Brundtland and Ted Turner are featured speakers on a keynote panel focusing on public-private partnerships and innovation in health. (For more information about the conference and the upcoming release of the Thematic Report on Innovation in the Global Campaign for the Health MDGs series, visit http://www.norad.no/globalcampaign.)
During the conference, the UN Foundation will preview the 2.0 version of the mHealth Alliance's Health Unbound (HUB) website (http://www.healthunbound.org). This interactive web portal, of which the Norwegian government is a sponsor, allows people to share information and best practices about ways that mobile technology is improving delivery of healthcare to millions of people in developing countries. The conference also includes a discussion of the UN Foundation's ongoing work to support the Global Alliance for Clean Cookstoves (http://www.cleancookstoves.org) as an innovative way to improve health, economic development and environmental impact around the world. The government of Norway is one of the founding partners of the Alliance, which has already made significant progress on developing standards, increasing awareness and helping build the basis of a thriving market for clean cooking technologies around the world. The UN Foundation's announcements during the conference include several commitments toward the UN Secretary-General's Global Strategy for Women's and Children's Health (for more information, visit http://www.everywomaneverychild.org).
The UN Foundation Board trip to Norway culminates in a visit to the Svalbard archipelago in the northernmost part of the country, where Board members will meet with international scientists to discuss the effects of climate change in the Arctic. Board members will offer a live briefing following their visit to Svalbard on June 23 at 10:00am ET (for details and to RSVP, contact press(at)unfoundation(dot)org).
Yunus and Turner are also 2 of the 19 special advocates for UN millennium goals Their recent EVENTS include MDG Advocates met on 8 May 2011 at the margins of the Fourth UN Conference on the Least Developed Countries in Istanbul, Turkey. "There is no way to achieving the Millennium Development Goals if we are not successful in achieving them in the Least Developed Countries," Her Highness Sheikha Moza bint Nasser said at the Conference. "Our success here is the real criteria of our commitment."

if we could find one of the before and after organisers naila's networks of grameen could help publicise the biggest projects it wants conntinous conectivity of - it would be hugely useful if halima could see if scott case is in dc when naila is since there could be at elast 2 common talking points - obama start up; ending malaria something unfoundation has complimented scott case on
it youtube video is almost an ad of what only grameen solutions can do to connect the deepest solutions youth projects and yunus http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=-Nobp3n6FHU in the first summit it claims to have brought together 1000 new media leaders from around the world - so it is also closely sybergetic to france's EG8

another good news broadcaster in us when it comes to developing world is bloomberg http://www.washingtonpost.com/business/yunus-sees-need-to-overhaul-...
Tom Keene Bloomberg: I last spoke to him in Davos, he is the Nobel peace prize winner and a magnet for accolade and criticism. You have got to help me here and I thank Marralyn Bunting at The Guardian for pointing out that you are ancient, you are old you are a sprightly 71 and the guy that fired you was a 77 year old finance minister . Only in Bangladesh could that happen. You were let go because of your age, that was the back story at Grameen Bank.
Yunus : That’s true : their position was I should have resigned when I was 60 years old and now that I am 71 how could I continue in my position. I said you should have reminded me 11 years back - why 11 years later? but they insisted I quit, and I did quit
Tom Keene: There’s been a lot of criticism. How do you respond to a global or local bangladesh criticism to this bank that you established and microfinance that I will suggest was absolutely revolutionary even within development economics- where did this turn into a critiocism
Yunus: Well the criticisms are always there they cant figure out can you lend money to the poor people and still run a bank and make profit – the profit goes to the poor poep because the bank is owned by the borrowers- there’s something fishy that must be there otherwise it doesn’t make sense. We keep telling them it’s a very transparent system, people take the money, use it for income generating purposes , pay us back, not only does it work in Bangladesh and rest of the world it works right here in new york city. I was just coming from one of those groups who were taking a loan and they were very happy with that. There’s no problem
Tom Keene: I have a wrong stereotype of bangladesh. Check out this chart folks (I didn’t know this – here are Bangladesh exports – up and up we go – bangladesh as a country is not the stereotype that we know of 30 or 40 years ago – what does the west most get wrong about Bangladesh
Yunus: People still think that Bangladesh is still the same old way of about 30 years back., That’s wrong- it’s a brand new country. The empowerment of women is a very significant part of bangladesh today. It is the most dramatic change that has happened to bangaldesh. The impact on women is empowerment and the fact that they are participating in many social and economic activities and microcredit is all over the country – the kind of banking that we introduced in bangldesh – 80% of the poor families within the network of grameen microcredit program so this is an enormous amount of money that goes into the hands of the poor people particularly power wonen
Tom Keene: Here is a chart that shows the divide per capital in GDP in various countries
We have usa up top , china way below it, this is a surprise to many people in USA who are afraid of china -then India and balgladesh of course -to close that gap do you support the economics of Jeffrey Sachs or of bill easterly which of the those 2 do you support
Yunus: I would say that we need to focus more on institutional changes before we talk about the amount of money or the incentive mechanism as we need to change the framework – like for example the financial system doesn’t go into the areas it is most needed among the poor and the remote areas. We need financial reform of the institution
Tom Keene” How do you get them to pay back the loan – because they are earning an income they pay you back, as they earn they are paying back, money is recovered on a weekly basis to make it easy – that is why it has spread all over the world even in new york city and Nebraska
Yunus: Here’s an idea folks- go read the nobel lecture ; its one of the bests of the web – where you learn the bio and the lectures of the various nobel winners- here’s dr yunus- bring up the first quote
in a poverty-free world the only place you will be able to see poverty is ion the poverty museum when children take a tour they will be horrified to see the indignity that some human being had to go through
Tom Keene: You put that in the past tense - can you say that know that there is a poverty museum’
Yunus: Not yet but they should be created- every country should create them
Tom Keene: So the gloomsters at Columbia have this wrong - in truth there is a developing Africa, a developing bangladesh, its not as bad at the margin as it was 20 years ago
Yunus: Absolutely the emerging nation , the technology changes everything, bangladesh is a country where in just ten years most people have a mobile –today 65 million mobile subscribers- the internet services are flowing into te remote areas through the mobiles so the technology is changing these countries and the policies very fast
Tom Keene: If you were president obama what would be your policy prescription for the unite d states to at te margin assist bangladesh
Yunus: Of course we need global assistance but that doesn’t mean money will solve everything – it’s a question of designing the right sort of thing; I am talking about designing social business – business today in the world is about making money obsessed with making money – social business is about creating business to solve problems without any interest in personal gain – that’s social business-
Tom Keene: Sounds like an idea for Michael Porter who is very influential – myunus thank you for coming by
